Mechanicals Workshop with 1 teacher on Zoom and 1 in the classroom.
Jan 2023

(This was part of a series of workshops on A Midsummer Night’s Dream).

Mechanical dance

After learning about the Mechanicals’ day jobs, students were asked to transform a sketched image into a 3D living picture. They were given some accordion music to dance to.

Giphys

Students designed giphys to show a particular Mechanical’s profession. They then learned a key line from that particular character to pair with the Giphy.

The Winter’s Tale workshop compellation video. This workshop laste 12 hours in all, and was conducted in August, 2021. (Secondary) Students were made familiar with the story through activities such as a ‘Story Whoosh’, which is a dramatic way of telling the story. The Teacher tells the story, while the students act it out at the same time. Students only had 2 hours to get familiar with the final script, and were allowed to use their script as back up. These second language students coped very well- I’ll be seeing them again soon!

Teaching Shakespeare to students who are not Native English speakers, is a challenge in Asia, but can be rewarding when they are prepared to work hard.

Of course, they must be engaged in our teaching. It may surprise some that Shakespeare is still a hot subject here in Hong Kong. I have been teaching the bard for 11 years, in primary and secondary schools. At present I am  working part- time in one secondary school, while also conducting another Shakespeare workshop in a prestiges secondary school on Hong Kong Island.
